For more than a century now, new media and emerging technologies have increasingly marked the field of architectural practice and theory. Architects generate their own concepts or appropriate other theorists’s and historians’s concepts in order to contextualize their work. Our task in this seminar is to research, document, analyze and relate to one another theories and architectural practices as these evolve around new emerging technologies. Determining joints between theory and practice, we seek to configure, via the new media, passages from material to virtual space, from haptic to optical order, from meaning production to its reception.
Class discussions will be based on assigned readings and individual presentations. A final paper is required at the end of the semester. For the final paper a topic for investigation will be assigned to the students to research it over the course of the semester..
