The design direction delves into an ongoing international architectural competition for architecture students. The intervention site is an abandoned airstrip in Iceland. Discussions in architecture have long considered non-places: infrastructures that are always identical to themselves and unable to connect in any way to time and space. Issues of reading the landscape and researching corresponding paradigms are explored in order to submit a proposal with multiple and specific spatial qualities. Issues such as how one experiences the place and landscape with the gaze and the body are main features of corresponding projects. The correlation of small and large scale, such as the human scale in relation to the terrain and the horizon, acquire great importance. Materials and construction logic, as well as sustainability issues become equally important elements of the architectural proposal. The international competition organizer selected judges from renowned firms and Pritzker Prize winners.
