The course aims in a presentation of the architecture from the first efforts of the mankind  to create its own environment up to the end of the Middle Ages. The architectural creation of various seasons will be examined in terms of typology, morphology and construction, within  its social, economic and ideological frame. Aim of the presentation is an effort to  comprehend the “official” and “grand” edifices  as well as the buildings of a “minor architecture”, which constitute the standard of comparison for the evaluation of the “monuments”. Thus for each period of architecture questions of design (such as the use of prototypes, the imitation, the renaissance of forms etc), questions of construction (such as the under certain conditions continuity and the interruption of building tradition etc) will be examined.
